So Nikon offers a prime lense which is set at 35mm. The aperture range goes down to f/1.8 which means the aperture can open up larger to let more light in. This number explains the "speed" of the lense. The lower this number the lower light situations you can shoot in without decreasing shutter speed. I really enjoy this lense so far and from all my reading some photographer's shoot only with this lens. In the old film days this lense is equivalent to a 50mm lense, which was a great standard versatile lense.
